Hometown report update: 14 Utahns playing in postseason tournaments

Of the 43 Utahns playing Division I college basketball, 14 will be playing in postseason tournaments this week. Markus Duran and the rest of the 15-seeded Pacific Tigers will take on the heavily-favored 2-seeded Miami Hurricanes on Friday on TNT. Meanwhile Utahns playing for BYU, Long Beach State, Stanford and Washington are playing in the NIT, while players from Hawaii and Weber State are hosting CIT first-round games.

CHARLES ABOUO

Was: Logan High. Now: CB Peñas Huesca, Spain

Note: Was one of six players in double figures in Huesca's win over Planasa NV on Saturday. Huesca is having its best season since 1997.

BEN AIRD

Was: Bountiful High. Now: Utah Valley

Note: The junior center led the team in scoring with 15.1 points per game.

LANCE ALLRED

Was: East High. Now: Fuerza Regia Monterrey, Mexico

Note: Averaged 14.3 points and 9.2 rebounds in 28.8 minutes. The well-traveled Allred has played for teams on five different continents since 2010.

NATE AUSTIN

Was: Lone Peak High. Now: BYU

Note: Started in the Cougars' narrow loss to San Diego in the WCC tournament. Averaged 3.5 points and 4.2 rebounds for the NIT-bound Cougars.

QUINCY BAIR

Was: American Fork High. Now: Utah State

Note: The freshman guard/forward quit the team in December.

TAYLOR BROWN

Was: Alta High. Now: Utah Valley

Note: UVU junior guard averaged 2.1 points, 1.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists per game.

ELLIOTT BULLOCK

Was: Olympus High. Now: Stanford

Note: The junior forward/center did not play this season for the NIT-bound Cardinal.

BEN CLIFFORD

Was: Bingham High. Now: Utah State

Note: Came on strong late in the season for the injury-plagued Aggies, scoring 16 points on 4 of 5 shooting from 3-point distance in USU's final game.

JAYSON CHEESMAN

Was: Mountain View High. Now: Southern Utah

Note: Led the Thunderbirds blocks (1.9) while averaging 6.8 points and 6 rebounds a game.

BRIAN CURRAN

Was: Juan Diego High. Now: Lamar

Note: The freshman guard played in just two games for the Cardinals, who struggled to a 1-17 record in the Southland Conference.

CRAIG CUSICK

Was: Orem High. Now: BYU

Note: The senior guard has seen his minutes steadily increase. He averaged 4.3 points and 2.2 assists per game this season.

BRANDON DAVIES

Was: Provo High. Now: BYU

Note: Nearly had a triple-double against USD (20 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists). He has averaged 17.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in his senior season.

MARCEL DAVIS

Was: American Fork High. Now: Utah State

Note: The freshman guard led the Aggies in assists, averaging 3.3 helpers a game.

RAUL DELGADO

Was: Springville High. Now: BYU

Note: The junior from Chihuahua, Mexico is averaging 1.9 points, 1 rebound and .5 assists.

DENG DENG

Was: Granger High and Cottonwood High. Now: Long Beach State

Note: Averages 5.2 points for the regular-season Big West champions, who will play at Baylor on Wednesday in the NIT.

Note: Sophomore hasn't played since Feb. 16; scored 8 points in 20 minutes this season.

MARKUS DURAN

Note: Helped the Tigers win the Big West tournament, will play Miami in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Austin, Texas, on Friday.

Was: Davis High Now: Loyola Marymount

Note: The sophomore guard helped LMU in its remarkable WCC tournament run. The last-place Lions won three games before falling to Gonzaga in the semifinals.

REYES GALLEGOS

Was: West Jordan High. Now: Nebraska

Note: Led the Huskers in steals per game (1.4) while averaging 12.5 points a game — good enough for second best on the team.

MATT GARDNER

Was: Spanish Fork High. Now: Southern Utah

Note: The sophomore guard 1 point and 1 assist in three games of action this season.

LOUIS GARRETT

Was: Pine View High. Now: San Jose State

Note: Junior forward averaged 6.9 points per game for the Spartans.

SHAUN GREEN

Was: Olympus High. Now: CB Lucentum Alicante, Spain, LEB Gold

Note: Former Ute is averaging 8.4 points and 4.5 rebounds a game for third-place Lucentum.

MORGAN GRIM

Was: Riverton High. Now: Valga, Estonia KLM

Note: Hasn't played since Feb. 9.

JUSTIN HAMILTON

Was: Lone Peak High. Now: VEF Riga, Latvia LBL

Note: Has become an important player off the bench for his new team — especially in the VTB United League.

CAL HANKS

Was: Mountain Crest High. Now: Southern Utah

Note: Junior center averaged 3.6 points, 3 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game — all improvements on his sophomore season.

IAN HARWARD

Was: Orem High. Now: BYU

Note: The freshman center is averaging 1 point and 1 rebound per game.

TYLER HAWS

Was: Lone Peak High. Now: BYU

Note: The sophomore the Cougars in minutes (34 per game), points (20.9) and free-throw shooting (86.8%)

HOLTON HUNSAKER

Was: Woods Cross High. Now: Utah Valley

Note: Led the team in steals (1.4 per game) and was second in points (13.2) while shooting better than 90% from the field.

JAREN JEFFERY

Was: Delta High. Now: Southern Utah

Note: Junior forward more than doubled his average points (3.5) and rebounds (3.3) from last season.

JORDAN JOHNSON

Was: Delta High. Now: Southern Utah

Note: Senior guard averaged 3.6 points and 3.3 rebounds for the T-birds, who were knocked out in the first round of the Big Sky tournament.

JUSTIN JOHNSON

Was: Green River High. Now: Utah Valley

Note: The 6-foot-6 freshman didn't log any minutes with UVU this season.

JORDAN LOVERIDGE

Was: West Jordan High. Now: Utah

Note: Freshman played great in the Pac-12 tournament, helping the Utes upset Cal with his 20-point, 8-rebound, 5-assist performance.

TYSON KOEHLER

Was: Alta High. Now: Southern Utah

Note: Forward/center averaged 1.3 points and 1.7 rebounds in his senior season — down from his best season as a sophomore in 2010-11.

ALEX MORTENSEN

Was: Springville High. Now: Utah

Note: Sophomore guard played just seven minutes all season for the Utes.

LOGAN MORTENSON

Was: Juan Diego High. Now: New Hampshire

Note: Drained a 3-pointer in UNH's first-round loss in the America East tournament to Vermont. Averaged 1.4 points in his freshman season.

RYAN OSTERLOH

Was: Skyline High. Now: Utah

Note: Senior walkon guard completed his career at Utah, scoring 2 points 10 minutes of play this season.

TYLER OTT

Was: Desert Hills High. Now: UC Davis

Note: Freshman played 3 minutes in the Aggies' final game of the season — a loss to Cal Poly in the Big West tournament.

Note: Averaging 6.3 points per game for the club, while shooting 54.3 percent from the field.

NICHOLAS PAULOS

Note: Sharpshooting sophomore averaged 8 points a game while shooting 40.6 percent from beyond the 3-point line.

Note: The junior transfer from SLCC redshirted this season.

Note: Sophomore forward 2 point in 10 minutes of action this season.

STALLON SALDIVAR

Was: Judge Memorial High. Now: Northern Arizona

Note: The senior guard led the Lumberjacks in assists (4.6) and steals (1.5) while placing fourth in points (6.6).

SETH SCOTT

Was: Mountain View High. Now: Melbourne Tigers, Australia

Note: Averaging 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds for the sixth-place Tigers.

JOSH SHARP

Was: Lone Peak High. Now: BYU

Note: Averaging 4.4 points per game while shooting .567 from the field, which is second-best on the team.

JACKSON STEVENETT

Was: Davis High Now: Southern Utah

Note: Led the Thunderbirds in points (17.6), rebounds (6.1) and free-throw shooting 86.7 %.

JORDAN STONE

Was: Sky View High. Now: Utah State

Note: Helped Utah State to be one of the top teams in rebounding margin.

JACE TAVITA

Was: Brighton High. Now: Hawaii

Note: Averaging 5.6 assists and 3.2 points per game for the Warriors, who will host Air Force in the CIT first round on Thursday.

NICK THOMPSON

Was: Clearfield High. Now: Utah Valley

Note: One of UVU's most versatile players, the senior led UVU in assists (4.2) while also averaging 7.9 rebounds and 9.9 points per game.

TAI WESLEY

Was: Provo High. Now: SPO Rouen, France, NLB Pro B

Note: Hasn't played since a double-double in Rouen's upset of Fos Ouest on March 9.

CJ WILCOX

Was: Pleasant Grove High. Now: Washington

Note: The junior guard is the leading scorer (16.7 points) for the Huskes, who face BYU on Tuesday in the first round of the NIT.

HARRY WHITT

Was: Judge Memorial. Now: Utah

Note: The 6-foot-10 center will sat out the 2011-12 season because of transfer rules.
