MINNEAPOLIS — The Utah baseball team struggled on offense in a 4-1 loss to Minnesota at the Dairy Queen Classic.
Minnesota (6-4) had nine hits compared to three for the Utes (5-4). Dallas Carroll was 2-for-3 to lead Utah at the plate.
Although the Utes' Carroll got the first hit of the game in the third inning, Minnesota got on the board first with two runs on four hits in the bottom of the third.
A leadoff triple for the Gophers in the fifth inning was the start of a two-run inning that also saw an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, giving Minnesota a 4-0 lead.
Utah got on the board in the sixth inning, after Braden Anderson reached base with a single before scoring on two errors after a failed pickoff attempt.
Tanner Banks pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing four runs and eight hits with three strikeouts in the loss. Josh Chapman entered in relief and pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing just one hit with one strikeout.
Ben Meyer earned the win on the mound for Minnesota, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts over eight innings.
"Their pitcher did a nice job tonight," Utah head coach Bill Kinneberg said. "They got a lot of quick outs and he limited us to very few opportunities.."
Utah closes out the tournament on today against Dartmouth at 10 a.m. MT.
UTAH VALLEY BASEBALL: At Sacramento, Calif., Stone Ramsey had three hits and Devin Nelson picked up his first career win as Utah Valley University evened its series at Sacramento State with a 6-4 win on Saturday at John Smith Field.
Devin Nelson, who went without a decision in 2012 and in his first two outings of 2013, pitched 61?3 innings and gave up two earned runs (four total) on seven hits and struck out four.
Jeff Barto threw the final 22?3 innings and retired the final seven hitters he faced to earn his first save of the season. Nelson and Barto combined to strike out six without allowing a walk.
Ramsey's three-hit day included an RBI single in the eighth inning. Mark Krueger and Willie Pratt each had two hits and an RBI for the Wolverines (5-6).
SLCC BASEBALL: At Carson City, Nev., the Bruins (12-6, 6-2 SWAC) have won three straight games following a doubleheader sweep of Western Nevada College (14-10, 2-6 SWAC) on Saturday. The Bruins won the day's first game 4-0 and closed the weekend out with a 6-3 victory over the Wildcats in the afternoon contest.
In the first game, sophomore catcher Bo Fisher was 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, a home run and three RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Rhett Nelson earned the win in the second game in six innings of work. Sophomore outfielder Bryan Heward was 1-for-3 with a triple, a pair of RBIs, two walks and two runs scored.
BYU SOFTBALL: At San Diego, an 11-hit outing against New Mexico helped lift BYU to a 6-1 victory in its first game of the day, but three homeruns and four errors ended the Cougars action at the San Diego Classic with a 12-3 loss to Long Beach State on Saturday in San Diego.
Tori Almond pitched a four-inning two-hitter en route to her fourth win of the season and Hannah Howell earned her first save of the season after coming in to start the fifth inning and holding the Lobos to no hits. JC Clayton, Marissa Bravo and Carly Duckworth each contributed with two hits apiece and combined for four of the six Cougar RBI.
Although BYU (7-13) was able to hold the 49ers' (11-6) first three batters to no hits, four Cougar errors and three 49er home runs made up the difference and allowed Long Beach State to score 12 runs on seven hits in the second game of the day.
