PROVO — BYU senior Ryan Waite set a new school record in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:48.49 at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. Waite won his heat and took sixth overall in the championship division of the 800 meters.
"Waite set a new school record, which was the highlight of the day for us," distance coach Ed Eyestone said. "David Graham and Jason Witt also ran well for us today in our last real regular season meet."
Graham won the 800-meter college division with a time of 1:50.11, his season-best. In the men's mile, Witt took 10th place, finishing in 4:05.59, the third-best mark by a Cougar this year. Cade Lindahl took fourth overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.38.
BYU's Victor Weirich set a season-high mark in the pole vault Saturday at the Air Force Team Challenge in Colorado Springs, Colo. Weirich cleared 18 feet, 2 inches, which ties him for the third-best mark in the nation this year.
"Victor was unbelievable today," BYU head coach Mark Robison said. "He's finally healthy and ready to roll. He has one of the best heights in the nation now, so that's great."
BYU SOFTBALL: At St. George, BYU softball's seventh-inning rally wasn't enough as it fell to No. 6 University of Tennessee 6-3 at the Canyons Complex.
Seven BYU (1-3) players had hits in the game and JC Clayton and Lacey Millett had RBIs for the Cougars. BYU allowed Tennessee (5-0) to score six runs in the first five innings and then held the Volunteers scoreless before rallying in the seventh to score three runs.
Madisen Robb started the bottom of the seventh inning with a single to right field and Alexandra Hudson Shamo followed with a walk to force Tennessee to take a pitching change and bring in Ivy Renfroe in relief of her younger sister, Ellen. Ashlee Brawley Robinson stepped up to the plate and drew the walk to load the bases for BYU and then Robb scored BYU's first run on a wild pitch. Ellen then re-entered the game to pitch and recorded Tennessee's first out on a liner back to the mound. BYU scored two more runs on RBIs from Clayton and Millett, but wasn't able to bring in anymore in the 6-3 loss.
UTAH TRACK AND FIELD: At Seattle, finishing up action on the final day of the Husky Classic, the University of Utah women's track and field team displayed some great effort and set several new personal records. Capturing the spotlight for the Utes was senior Amanda Mergaert's record-setting performance in the mile.
Mergaert competed in the invitational mile for the Utes. In section two, the fifth through seventh spots came down to the wire. In the end, Mergaert finished seventh in 4:35.35. She was seventh in her heat and eighth overall.
UTAH SOFTBALL: At St. George, junior center fielder Chalese Fankhauser went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, but the University of Utah softball team dropped a 6-3 decision to Seattle in its third game of the Red Desert Classic on Saturday at the Canyons Complex.
Utah (2-1) was led by Fankhauser, who hit her second double of the season and the eighth of her career to go with her third career triple, her first this season.
BYU RUGBY: At Las Vegas, the Cougars notched 8 tries in their 44-5 victory over Texas A&M at the Las Vegas Invitational.
BYU newcomer prop Kody Thompson started the scoring in the third minute after a quick series of phases from a BYU counter attack.
"Texas A&M is a solid team," said BYU captain Ryan Roundy, "We wanted to try and put them under some pressure, but it sort of came back to bite us a bit early on."
The Cougars would get back to their try-scoring ways with wing Will Taylor, freshman scrum half Luke Mocke and All American center Seki Kofe carrying the BYU score sheet.
With two conversions from freshman fly half Jonny Linehan, BYU led at the break 24-0.
