Just a couple more days before we'll be visited by that friendly, somewhat burly and out-of-shape guy dressed in red.
Lest he be mistaken for an offensive lineman from the University of Utah football team, we're actually talking about Santa Claus, that jolly old elf who can get from one place to another almost as fast as Gary Andersen.
And since it's the season of giving, and Christmas Day is almost upon us, what better time than to ask for some special gifts for the following folks on the local sports scene — some have been naughty, others nice — who deserve to find the following presents under their tree or in their stockings this year.
Yes, here's our Christmas Wish List for 2012:
The Utah Jazz: Some consistency. Thus far, the Jazz have been the proverbial Forrest Gump box o' chocolates — you never know what you're gonna get. Great one night, awful the next. Almost always terrific at home, usually lousy on the road. From one game to the next, it's been maddening for Jazz fans and coach Tyrone Corbin.
Jazz fans: Patience. With this unpredictable bunch (see above), you're gonna need it.
Damian Lillard: The NBA Rookie of the Year Award. Sure, it's a little early yet, but the former Weber State star is well on his way to stashing this honor away as a first-year star for the Portland Trail Blazers.
Bronco Mendenhall: Industrial-strength earplugs. That way, he will no longer be forced to listen to all that criticism he has received this season for the fierce loyalty he showed banged-up senior quarterback Riley Nelson.
Taysom Hill: A fully healthy knee, so that after seeing his freshman season abruptly ended by a fluky and senseless knee injury, next year he can begin in earnest his bid to join the long list of great BYU quarterbacks.
Kyle Whittingham: Pac-12 quality players, especially at the quarterback position. That's the only way the Utes are going to become a major player in their big-boy conference.
Gary Andersen: Peace of mind. He transformed Utah State's football program into something Aggie fans can be mighty proud of. Then, on the heels of the school's best season ever, he bolted for the greener pastures of Wisconsin. Here's hoping he knows in his heart that he did the right thing.
Matt Wells: Continuity in USU's program. The Aggies' new head football coach inherits a team that's gone from good to great over the last two seasons. He's been enlisted to keep it rolling in Logan — here's hoping he can.
Jody Sears: Wins — and hopefully, a lot of them. After having the "interim" tag taken off his job title, the Weber State football coach must reward his supporters by moving the program in the right direction after this year's 2-9 finish.
U. of U. basketball: Continued improvement. Coming off last year's dreadful 6-win season, the Utes are showing signs of turning the corner. They may not be world-beaters yet, but they're headed in the right direction.
BYU basketball: No Jabari envy. The Cougars didn't land coveted prep recruit Jabari Parker, who chose to attend Duke instead. But BYU's got enough talent in the pipeline that the Cougars should be just fine in the future, especially since Parker probably would've played just one season in Provo before likely leaving for a different type of "mission" — the NBA.
Utah State basketball: Success in the Mountain West Conference. After all those years of wishing and wanting to be a member of the MWC, let's hope the Aggies find the move to their new conference well worth the wait next year.
Weber State basketball: Life after Lillard. The Wildcats are learning that they can still be a force to be reckoned with after losing arguably the greatest player in the program's history.
