BYU basketball notebook: BYU, USU schedule late-season makeup
PROVO — This was supposed to be the week that BYU played two in-state rivals at home.
However, due to the postponement of the Utah State game last Wednesday, the Cougars faced just one — Utah. BYU held on to beat the Utes Saturday night at the Marriott Center, 61-58.
For the Cougars, it was a long, unexpected layoff after falling a week earlier at Iowa State.
"It felt like a couple of months off," guard Tyler Haws said. "Whenever you're sitting on a loss, it's tough. But we were excited and ready to play."
"It was a tough week," said coach Dave Rose. "You don't ever want to think that you've expended energy for no reason, but we prepared hard for two days then we didn't end up using that preparation (for Utah State). We gave (the players) the day off on Wednesday to try to combat that a little bit. It probably helped us because the energy we played with the last 10 minutes was absolutely necessary for us to pull this out at the end of the game."
The Cougars and Aggies were originally scheduled to meet on Dec. 5, but the game was postponed due to USU forward Danny Berger's medical emergency during practice on Dec. 4. Berger's condition was upgraded from critical to fair earlier this week and he was released from the hospital Saturday morning.
Saturday afternoon, it was announced that the BYU-USU contest has been rescheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. at the Marriott Center. The game will be broadcast on BYUtv.
All tickets issued for the original game will be honored on Feb. 19. Ticketing questions should be directed to the Marriott Center Ticket Office at (800) 322-2981 or (801) 422-BYU1.
Late in the week, Rose and USU coach Stew Morrill talked about rescheduling the game.
"(The date of the rescheduled game) was mutually agreed upon by both of us," Rose said. "Both of us would have rather played on a different date. But this one worked out the best. I wish it was a little bit earlier, and so does Stew. We wish we could have done it in December or January. But we look forward to a late-season game with Utah State. Last year we played them in the first game of the season, which was the earliest we ever played them. This year, we're playing them the latest we've ever played them. Next year, we'll play somewhere in the middle, I hope."
DOZEN STRAIGHT: Before missing a jumper with 26 seconds remaining, Utah center Jason Washburn had made 12 consecutive field goals over three games (Texas State, Boise State and BYU). The senior made his first four against the Cougars. "He's doing a nice job. He's picking and choosing. He's not putting the ball down on the floor as much," Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said. "He's catching and making no dribble moves. He's playing with some confidence."
IN MEMORY: On the day former Utah coach Rick Majerus was laid to rest in Milwaukee, the Utes debuted "RM" patches on their red road uniforms. The white-stitched initials are centered along the front neckline. Utah's coaches wore memorial patches on their suit jackets. The university was represented well at Majerus' funeral in Wisconsin. Jon M. Huntsman Sr., and former Runnin' Ute Alex Jensen were among the speakers. Others in attendance included Michael Doleac, Nick Jacobson, Andre Miller, Hanno Mottola and Keith Van Horn, plus Utah athletics director Chris Hill.
