College roundup: Hamson leads BYU to volleyball victory over UVU

PROVO — Jennifer Hamson led the No. 16 BYU women's volleyball team Tuesday night in a 3-0 victory (25-10, 25-15, 25-16) over Utah Valley University in the Smith Fieldhouse.

Hamson finished the match with 13 kills, four blocks and a .455 hitting percentage. Alexa Gray finished with 12 kills.

Heading into the NCAA Tournament, BYU ends the regular season 26-3 overall and 13-3 in the West Coast Conference.

UTAH STATE VOLLEYBALL: At San Antonio, top-seeded Utah State was eliminated from the Western Athletic Conference tournament by fourth-seeded New Mexico State, 3-0 (21-25, 19-25, 16-25) in the semifinals. Regular-season WAC champion Utah State ends its milestone season with a 21-9 record.

SOUTHERN UTAH FOOTBALL: Thunderbird freshmen Zak Browning and James Cowser have been named two of the 20 finalists for the Jerry Rice Award, given each year to the top freshman football player at the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.

BYU GOLF: At El Paso, Texas, senior Zac Blair shot a final-round 73 (+2) to finish the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic tied for 19th place on Tuesday.

Blair birdied three of his final eight holes.

UTAH VALLEY WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: At Sacramento, Calif., Utah Valley University senior and current Great West Conference Player of the Week Sammie Jensen had 18 points and 18 rebounds but it wasn't enough as the Wolverines suffered a 74-62 loss at Sacramento State on Tuesday.
