PROVO — BYU senior forward Stephen Rogers' career is over due to recurring knee problems, coach Dave Rose announced Wednesday.
"I feel terrible for Stephen and his family," Rose said in a statement. "He worked hard all offseason with hopes of returning to practice and helping our team this season. Stephen has had a major impact on the success of our teams the last couple years and he will be missed."
Rogers transferred to BYU from Mesa Community College before the 2010-11 season. He averaged 21.3 points and 5.3 rebounds and knocked down 85 3-pointers as a junior college All-America selection. Last season, he was averaging 9.9 points in his first 10 games as a Cougar before tearing the meniscus in his right knee. Rogers underwent surgery and played just eight games the rest of the season.
In April, Rogers had another surgery, but his knee has not responded to treatment during rehab.
"I've enjoyed my experience at BYU and I'm extremely grateful for all the support from family, friends and the fans," Rogers said in a statement. "I look forward to supporting the team this season and doing what I can from the sidelines."
