Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson pauses during an NCAA college football news conference after announcing that defensive coordinator Al Groh has been fired, Monday, Oct. 8, 2012, in Atlanta. The move comes two days after Georgia Tech (2-4, 1-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) lost 47-31 to Clemson. The previous week, Georgia Tech gave up 49 points in an embarrassing loss to Middle Tennessee.

ATLANTA — Charles Kelly says there's no magical defense.
That's OK. The newly named interim defensive coordinator has not been asked to bring magic to Georgia Tech's downtrodden defense.
Coach Paul Johnson fired Al Groh as defensive coordinator on Monday and assigned Kelly, the secondary coach, control of the defense for the remainder of the season. Kelly says he has focused on fundamentals as the Yellow Jackets work in a bye week.
Georgia Tech has given up more than 40 points in three straight losses for the first time in school history. Kelly says he wants the defense to play "wide open" when the Yellow Jackets visit Boston College next week.
Kelly says he was given no promises from Johnson about his possible candidacy to be more than an interim coordinator.
