High school football: Top 25 for Week 9

1. Jordan (6-1)

Class: 5A

Was: 1. Last week: Beat Cottonwood, 35-33. Outlook: The 'Diggers survived a nightmarish first half against Cottonwood and overcame a two-touchdown deficit by scoring 21 points in the third quarter to remain undefeated against Utah teams. Next up: vs. Brighton, Friday.

2. East (7-0)

Class: 4A

Was: 2. Last week: Beat Bountiful, 47-13. Outlook: The Leopards continued their dominance with a convincing win against Bountiful. In seven games, East's average margin of victory is 39.3 points per game. Next up: at Highland, Friday.

3. Syracuse (8-0)

Class: 5A

Was: 3. Last week: Beat Fremont, 46-8. Outlook: Hercules would have a hard time scoring against these Titans. Syracuse has yet to surrender more than 14 points and has three shutouts. Next up: at Weber, Friday.

4. Timpview (7-1)

Class: 4A

Was: 4. Last week: Beat Salem Hills, 57-0. Outlook: The T-Birds continue to get stronger as the season has progressed. Last week, they strung together the best four quarters of the season against Salem Hills. Next up: vs. Springville, Wednesday.

5. Alta (6-2)

Class: 5A

Was: 6. Last week: Beat Copper Hills, 63-6. Outlook: The Hawks responded after a lopsided loss the previous week with a 57-point win. Next up: vs. West Jordan, Thursday.

6. Northridge (7-1)

Class: 5A

Was: 7. Last week: Beat Layton, 30-28. Outlook: The Knights came out sluggish in the first half but rallied from a 28-7 hole on the road at Layton for a dramatic fourth-quarter win. Next up: at Davis, Friday.

7. Mountain Crest (6-2)

Class: 4A

Was: 10. Last week: Beat Logan, 17-10. Outlook: After starting the season 1-2, Mountain Crest is back as a title contender in 4A with its upset against Logan. The Mustangs can clinch the region championship on Friday against Roy. Next up: vs. Roy, Friday.

8. Bingham (6-2)

Class: 5A

Was: 11. Last week: Beat American Fork, 33-0. Outlook: Big Blue had another slow start, but its offense woke up in the final three quarters against American Fork. Next up: vs. Lehi, Wednesday.

9. Logan (6-2)

Class: 4A

Was: 8. Last week: Lost to Mountain Crest, 17-10. Outlook: The Grizzlies don't have time to rest after losing last week with games at Box Elder and East remaining. Next up: at Box Elder, Friday.

10. Hurricane (7-0)

Class: 3A

Was: 12. Last week: Bye. Outlook: The Tigers haven't lost since Nov. 18, 2010 and will look to extend their 20 game win streak against Desert Hills following a bye last week. Next up: vs. Desert Hills, Thursday.

11. Juan Diego (8-0)

Class: 3A

Was: 13. Last week: Beat Wasatch, 49-7. Outlook: Juan Diego passed its toughest test of the season on the road at Wasatch easily with its backup quarterback. Next up: vs. Park City, Friday.

12. Box Elder (6-2)

Class: 4A

Was: 14. Last week: Beat Bonneville, 16-13. Outlook: The Bees are still looking for their first signature win of the season and will have a chance against Logan at home. Next up: vs. Logan, Friday.

13. Lone Peak (5-3)

Class: 5A

Was: 5. Last week: Lost to Pleasant Grove, 26-24. Outlook: Sandwiched between Bingham and Riverton, Pleasant Grove proved as a letdown game for the Knights. The Vikings outscored Lone Peak 24-7 in the second half. Next up: vs. Riverton, Wednesday.

14. Bountiful (6-2)

Class: 4A

Was: 9. Last week: Lost to East, 47-13. Outlook: It's crunch time for the Braves with major playoff seeding implications on the line against Woods Cross. Next up: at Woods Cross, Friday.

15. Riverton (5-3)

Class: 5A

Was: 15. Last week: Beat Lehi, 40-21. Outlook: Another team without a signature win. That can all change at Lone Peak this week. Next up: at Lone Peak, Wednesday.

16. Brighton (6-2)

Class: 5A

Was: 16. Last week: Beat West Jordan, 20-14. Outlook: Brighton's wheels are still shaky with a closer than expected win at home against West Jordan. The Bengals face a much more potent Jordan this week. Next up: at Jordan, Friday.

17. Skyline (5-3)

Class: 4A

Was: 17. Last week: Beat Westlake, 28-10. Outlook: Quietly the Eagles are starting to play good football with four straight wins. Skyline can clinch the region title and break a three game losing streak to Olympus in the Battle of the Rock. Next up: at Olympus, Friday.

18. Herriman (6-2)

Class: 4A

Was: 18. Last week: Beat Murray, 57-7. Outlook: The Mustangs took care of business on both sides of the ball for the second consecutive week. Next up: vs. Westlake, Friday.

19. Highland (5-3)

Class: 4A

Was: 19. Last week: Beat Cyprus, 45-0. Outlook: Right now the Rams are a dangerous team in 4A. Highland started to find itself in the loss against Bountiful and has since strung together two straight shutouts with East lurking this week. Next up: vs. East, Friday.

20. Pleasant Grove (5-3)

Class: 5A

Was: 22. Last week: Beat Lone Peak, 26-24. Outlook: The Vikings pulled the largest upset, beating then-No. 5 Lone Peak on Thursday night. Next up: at American Fork, Wednesday.

21. Woods Cross (6-2)

Class: 4A

Was: 21. Last week: Beat Clearfield, 47-0. Outlook: The Wildcats have yet to break through against the best teams in Region 6. They have a chance to change seeding at home against Bountiful. Next up: vs. Bountiful, Friday.

22. Maple Mountain (7-1)

Class: 4A

Was: 25. Last week: Beat Timpanogos, 14-13. Outlook: The Golden Eagles picked up their best win of the season against Timpanogos. Next up: at Orem, Wednesday.

23. Stansbury (8-0)

Class: 3A

Was: 23. Last week: Beat Ogden, 35-0. Outlook: The Stallions continue to gallop past outmatched competition week in and week out. Next up: at Grantsville, Thursday.

24. Hunter (5-2)

Class: 5A

Was: —. Last week: Beat Kearns, 21-20. Outlook: Behind 14 points in the final quarter in their win against Kearns, the Wolverines now control Region 2. Next up: at Taylorsville, Thursday.

25. Spanish Fork (7-1)

Class: 3A

Was: —. Last week: Beat Delta, 43-7. Outlook: Spanish Fork is finding a scary rhythm with four straight wins. The Dons have outscored 3A competition 226-26 in five games. Next up: vs. North Sanpete, Wednesday.

Dropped out: No. 20 Timpanogos, No. 24 Dixie.
