LOGAN — C.J. Lee shot a 68 on day one of the 4A State golf tournament to lead the pack.
The Timpview star has a 3-stroke lead on a trio of golfers including Maple Mountain's Kolton Remund, Timpanogos's Brandon Waldron and Woods Cross's Peyton Hastings, all who shot a 71.
"It was a good day," Lee said. "Everything clicked. My ball striking was good, I gave myself lots of chances and I made putts."
Maple Mountain's Kai Ruiz, Bonneville's Nick Smith, Orem's Trey Madsen and Sky VIew's Riley Archibald are four strokes behind Lee at 72.
T-bird head coach Jeff Ward said having a golfer like Lee brings a lot of comfort to a coach's mind.
"CJ definitely played fantastic," Ward said. "I know that when he goes out, that he's just going to play his game and bring in a solid, solid score and that score is going to be at or below par almost every time. It takes a lot of pressure off the rest of my team. It's been very nice."
Lee said he was lucky to make some putts on tougher greens that most of the field hit poorly on.
"Some of those pin locations were sketchy," Lee said. "I guess I was fortunate enough to not struggle with them as much."
In the team race, Timpview sits in fifth place, five strokes behind 4A-leading Maple Mountain, which has two golfers in the top five.
Four of the five teams at the top of the team standings are from Region 8; Timpanogos is tied for second at 304 and Orem is in fourth with 305.
Bonneville, which is tied for second Timpanogos is the only outsider from Region 5.
Ward was at a loss for words after his team's sub-par performance.
"Not bad, but it didn't turn out the way we wanted it to," he said. "All in all, I think we survived."
Lee said his team can "most definitely" recover from a rough day one and make the jump back into contention for the state championship Thursday.
"The reason I say that with confidence is because we've done that before," he said. "We are really capable of lots of things, and today was just one of those days where our numbers three and four didn't come in as strong and number two struggled a bit."
Day two begins at 10 a.m. at the Logan Golf and Country Club in Logan.
"I really know in each one of these five players that we have," Lee said about his hopes for the final round, "everybody on this team is really capable of shooting really good scores."
