Felt's Facts – Week 7

Undefeated/Winless Teams and Matchups

Nine schools remain unscathed, but just one in each of 4A, East, 2A, San Juan and 1A, Duchesne. Among 5A teams, Jordan, Northridge and Syracuse boast perfect records, while Hurricane, Juan Diego and Stansbury are unbeaten in 3A. (In the playoffs, Region 1 and 3 winners are in opposite brackets, and the Region 9 champ is opposite Region 10 and 11, so theoretically, undefeated teams could meet for the 5A and 3A championships.)

But the number of unblemished teams drops by at least one this week. Region 1 sees Syracuse at Northridge – the last contest pairing unbeatens before the playoffs. A Northridge win rewards the Knights with a 7-0 start for the first time since 2004. At 6-0, Syracuse is already off to its best-ever start.

Region 1 also has Weber at Fremont, this week's only game among the 13 winless squads. The Silver Wolves (0-6) can avoid their worst-ever start with a victory.

Across the state, no teams have a bye, making Week 7 the only week that every school plays.

Clinched and Nearly Clinched

Perhaps hard to believe, but many 1A teams have just two region battles left and all the 2A schools have only three regular season contests remaining. Some teams in every classification can secure postseason berths this week while others can clinch ties for playoffs spots.

In 5A's Region 1, the winner of Syracuse at Northridge clinches at least a tie for a playoff berth and puts the winner in the proverbial driver's seat in the race for the region crown.

In the 4A ranks, Region 6 finds that if favored Bountiful and East defeat Clearfield and Cyprus, respectively, both winners claim berths. Meanwhile in Region 7, if Westlake wins, victories by Olympus and/or Skyline guarantee a berth for the Titans and/or Eagles. The Timpview-Orem winner clinches a tie for a berth in Region 8. The Thunderbirds lock up their 23rd consecutive winning season (since 1990) with a victory.

In Class 3A's Region 9, Hurricane grabs a tie for a spot with a win. If Cedar beats Snow Canyon, Hurricane cements a postseason berth.

In 2A North, Manti has already secured a berth and Millard does with a victory over American Leadership. By defeating Kanab, 2A South's San Juan clinches a spot and solidifies the Broncos' 10th straight winning season. A Beaver triumph over Parowan and Grand over South Sevier clinches a tie for the victors.

Finally, in Class 1A South, Diamond Ranch and Monticello have wrapped up postseason berths.

No team has been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs and only four schools are out of contention for region championships: American Leadership and North Sevier in 2A North, Parowan in 2A South and Whitehorse in 1A South.

Strong Starts

Among the undefeated, Juan Diego is off to its best start since its 14-0 season in 2008 and is assured of its 11th consecutive winning campaign…. A victory against St. John Bosco (Calif.) on Saturday gives Jordan (5-0) its fastest start since beginning the 1998 season 7-0…. Stansbury (6-0), enjoying its best start, can match its school-record, seven-game winning streak set just last season.

A few teams haven't been 5-1 or better this late in the season for some time: Box Elder since 2003, Spanish Fork since 2002 and Woods Cross since 1993.

Mountain Crest, now in its 30th year, shoots for its 200th win.

In the coaching ranks, Mike Miller is again attempting to pick up career victory #100 – he won 48 at Olympus and has 51 at Riverton. And at Grand County, Dennis Wells guns for his 50th win.
