High school football: Felt's Facts Week 3

Published: Wednesday, Aug. 29 2012 10:09 p.m. MDT

The headliner game between Bingham and Colorado's Valor Christian lost a bit of its sheen when both teams dropped one-pointers to top-tier opponents last week. VC had its 25-game winning streak snapped and fell to fourth in the Colorado rankings while Bingham tumbled to 10th in Utah in MaxPreps' rankings.

But Bingham will still have its hands full when controversial Valor invades on Saturday night.

Valor Christian, a private school in suburban Denver, began its football program in 2008 with a "penchant for attracting Division I talent," according to the Denver Post. VC won three consecutive championships among mid-sized schools.

Valor moved to Colorado's largest classification this year, but other schools accused VC of blatant recruiting and no region would accept it. So Valor plays as an independent and none of its games count in region standings.

The Eagles are quarterbacked by Oklahoma State signee Luke Del Rio (and son of Denver Bronco defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio).

Now to the ever popular rivalry game notes feature.

Rivalry Games

Box Elder visits Bear River in the state's longest running uninterrupted rivalry and the fifth most-played series. Going into the 92nd meeting, Box Elder leads 64-25-2. Since 1959, the winner has taken home the Golden Spike.

In the 10th most-played rivalry, Morgan hosts Wasatch in their 83rd meeting. The Wasps own a 49-31-2 series advantage.

American Fork has a 37-16-1 series lead over Spanish Fork as these teams meet for the 55th time in Utah County, while in Weber County, Bonneville takes a 36-15 series lead into its 52nd game with Weber.

First-time Matchups

While 32 of this week's 54 games reprise contests from 2011's Week 3, but at the opposite field, seven games feature teams meeting for the first time: Bishop Gorman (Nev.) JV at Diamond Ranch (which DR lost on Tuesday), Summit Academy at Altamont, West at Desert Hills, Highland at Herriman, Legacy (Nev.) at Hurricane, Salem Hills at Juab and, of course, Valor Christian (Colo.) at Bingham.
