SALT LAKE CITY — In his first game on rehab assignment with the Bees, Peter Bourjos went 1-for-4 with a double in Monday night's 10-6 loss to Tucson.
The outfielder was placed on the 15-day disabled list last week with a sore wrist, after playing through the injury since a pitch hit him in the wrist back in March.
"I got hit by a pitch in spring training, and it's bothered me kind of on and off all year," said Bourjos.
For someone who started his career with the Orem Owlz in 2006, Bourjos has catapulted himself into the major league mix after becoming the 2010 PCL Rookie of the Year. Coincidentally, Bourjos logged 102 games as a member of the 2010 Bees squad before ending his tenure in Minor League baseball on Aug. 3 of the same year.
"It's nice being back here. I've got a lot of good memories here," said Bourjos. "Obviously, I'd rather be in the big leagues, but it's a good place to play. I love playing in front of these fans and the good atmosphere, so I'm going to have a lot of fun this next week."
While the Angels chase their playoff hopes, Bourjos finds himself with this Salt Lake squad trying to make a postseason run with just seven games remaining in the 2012 campaign. The Bees are currently five games behind division-leading Reno.
"It's always fun, especially going down to the wire like this. If we can get on a good roll here, then anything can happen," said Bourjos.
Bees manager Keith Johnson should enjoy the company of Bourjos, who at the leadoff spot might be just the spark his team needs to punch the postseason ticket.
"I hope (Bourjos) steps in and finds a nice little groove for himself so that when the season is over, whenever it's over, that he is able to take this experience and move forward," said Johnson.
And to no surprise, Bourjos was completely honest when asked about former Bee and MLB American League MVP candidate Mike Trout.
"Its fun to watch. (Trout) is the probably the best player in the big leagues hands down — on any team," said Bourjos. "It's been a lot of fun, and for how young he is, his future is just ... there is no ceiling. He can be the good-honest best player to ever play this game, so it's pretty incredible."
NOTEBOOK: It was another rough outing for the Bees pitching squad, who gave up 14 hits and 10 earned runs. Ed Lucas belted a home run in the second inning, and finished the night 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Luis Jimenez also had a solid night by going 3-for-5 with a home run, a pair of RBIs and one run scored.
STOLEN GOODS: Andrew Romine managed to steal his team-leading 23rd base of the season. As a team, the Bees have 125 total robs, which is second-best in the PCL.
ATTENDANCE: A mellow crowd of 7,044 baseball fans enjoyed watching the playoff-hopeful Bees at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
Padres 10, Bees 6
In short: Andrew Romine and Kole Calhoun crossed home plate courtesy of a Luis Jimenez ground ball, and a throwing error by the Tacoma pitcher. Ed Lucas delivered a solo-shot to put the Bees ahead by three runs. Tucson rallied for three runs in the third to level the score, and another three runs in the fourth inning. Both teams had a three-run eighth inning, and the Bees rally fell just short in the bottom of the ninth.
Bees manager Keith Johnson's take: "I thought our guys did a pretty good job, for the most part, of getting out of innings."
Up next: vs. Tucson today, 7:05 p.m. Rainiers RHP Anthony Bass (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Bees RHP Brad Mills (5-8, 5.83 ERA)
