KEARNS — Stansbury defeated rival Tooele, 5-2, in a matchup of unbeaten teams in the American Legion state tournament on Wednesday night. The victory gives the Stallions a bye into the state championship game, which will be played at Gates Field at Kearns High on Friday night. Jesse Clingman was the winning pitcher for Stansbury.
In elimination games on Wednesday, Taylorsville topped West, 17-7, and then defeated Weber in a 13-12 slugfest. West Jordan, behind the outstanding arm of Zach Draper, beat Cyprus 8-0 before losing to Helper, 12-7. Draper threw two complete-game shutouts in the state tournament.
The tournament resumes today at Gates Field. Helper faces Taylorsville at 4 p.m. and the winner plays Tooele at 7:30 p.m. The winner of the 7:30 p.m. game plays Stansbury at 4 p.m. on Friday.
