CARDIFF, Wales — Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge sent Britain into the quarterfinals of the Olympic men's football tournament on Wednesday, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win over Uruguay.
The result Wednesday in front of 70,000 fans in Cardiff meant Uruguay was eliminated.
The goal came on the stroke of halftime after Scott Sinclair beat a defender on the left wing. He ran toward goal, passed to Joe Allen who danced around another Uruguayan before threading the ball into the box, where Sturridge slid in to prod the ball in.
The hosts soaked up Uruguayan attacks in the final 30 minutes of the game, and two good saves by Jack Butland kept the score 1-0.
Coach Stuart Pearce rested 38-year-old captain Ryan Giggs for the match.
