Cougars happy with move to independence, WCC affiliation

Basketball: The Cougars were No. 2 in the WCC regular-season standings (12-4) and captured the conference tournament title. BYU lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and ended with a 26-7 record.

Cross country: The Cougars finished second in the WCC and No. 28 nationally.

Golf: BYU placed sixth in the WCC.

Gymnastics: The Cougars, who don't belong to a league, posted a 3-9 record and sent three athletes to the NCAA Regionals.

Soccer: BYU finished fourth in the WCC (5-2-1) and ended up with an 11-5-3 overall record.

Softball: The Cougars placed second in the regular season Western Athletic Conference standings (15-4) but won the conference tournament. BYU lost in the NCAA Regionals and finished with a 45-15 mark. After just one year in the WAC, the Cougars will compete in the Pacific Coast Softball Conference starting next season.

Swimming & diving: The Cougars won the MPSF title and finished with a 2-2 record.

Tennis: BYU posted an overall record of 8-15 and finished sixth in the WCC (3-6).

Track & field: BYU's Nachelle Mackie earned All-America honors. Mackie won both the indoor and outdoor 800 meters to become the first Cougar athlete to win the same event in the same season. BYU ended up ranked No. 11 in the indoor season, and No. 30 in the outdoor season.

Volleyball: The Cougars finished in a tie for third place in the WCC in the regular season (10-6) and posted a 21-9 overall record.
