NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Utah Valley University is the recipient of the Great West Conference Commissioner's Cup for the third consecutive year. The Commissioner's Cup is given to the institution that performed best overall in GWC-sponsored sports.
The order of finish of the six schools competing for this year's award remained the same as the past two years, with some fluctuation in the point totals. UVU tallied 83.5 points on its way to the three-peat.
"Achieving a third consecutive Commissioner's Cup represents a tremendous culmination to a banner year in Wolverine athletics, and speaks volumes to the dedication of our coaches and student-athletes," said Mike Jacobsen, UVU Director of Athletics. "I could not be prouder of the way these individuals have represented Utah Valley University in making this our most successful year since our jump to Division I, both academically and athletically."
The Wolverines, who had won six GWC championships in both 2009-10 and 2010-11, claimed 11 titles in the 14 GWC-sponsored sports in which they competed this year. Utah Valley won league championships in baseball, men's basketball, women's soccer, volleyball and softball, and swept the cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field titles for both men and women. In addition, the Wolverines were also runners-up in women's basketball and women's golf, giving them no finish lower than second in each GWC sport in which they competed.
"Utah Valley University has a strong commitment to Division I athletics, and President Holland and Athletic Director Mike Jacobsen share a common vision for where they want the program to go," said GWC Commissioner Ed Grom. "They have set a standard in the Great West, and I can see the progress made by all our institutions toward that standard. I congratulate the Wolverines on their third consecu?tive Commissioner's Cup."Comment on this story
