TEMPE, Ariz. — The Utah baseball team closed out its three-game series against Arizona State with a 4-2 loss to the 20th-ranked Sun Devils.
Utah out-hit ASU, 8-7, led by three hits from Parker Morin, who also drove in both of Utah's runs in the game. James Brooks and Cory Hunt each had a pair of hits.
Utah starter Mitch Watrous pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits with a strikeout. Tyler Wagner threw the final 1 2/3 innings, surrendering one run with two strikeouts.
Utah returns home this weekend to face Oregon State, with game one of the series beginning on Friday at noon MT.
SUU BASEBALL: At Fargo, N.D., senior right hander Joe Karlik allowed just one unearned run while tossing a complete game to help Southern Utah come away with a 4-1 win at North Dakota State on Sunday. The Thunderbirds captured the final two games of a four game set with Summit League leading Bison to split the weekend series.
UVU BASEBALL: At Houston, Willie Pratt's bases-clearing double capped a five-run eighth inning and helped preserve the nation's longest win streak as Utah Valley won its 28th straight, 8-6, over Houston Baptist on Sunday afternoon. The win moves UVU to 35-11 overall and 20-0 in the Great West Conference.
Adam Gunn pitched into the ninth and got the win for Utah Valley, moving his record to 8-3. The Wolverines tagged Jake Gonzalez for five runs to give the HBU closer his first loss.
Burgess and Pratt had three hits apiece on a 15-hit afternoon for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines travel to Old Westbury, New York for a four-game league series beginning next Friday. Utah Valley's magic number to clinch its third straight Great West regular season crown now sits at just one.
DIXIE STATE BASEBALL: At St. George, Tyler Slesk looped a two-out single to right field to bring home the go-ahead run in the eighth and Daniel Zapata pitched a perfect ninth to become the Dixie State Division-II career saves leader in the Red Storm's 5-4 series finale victory over Cal State Los Angeles on Sunday.
The non-conference victory gave DSC the series three games to one and improved their overall season record to 32-18. CSULA fell to 26-22. Both teams await the word from the NCAA about a spot in the four-team West Regional in a couple of weeks.
Dixie State finished the regular season for the second consecutive year with 32 wins. The Storm placed second in the Pacific West Conference behind California Baptist.
UTAH SOFTBALL: At Tempe, Ariz., junior outfielder Katelyn Elliott tied the school single-game record with three home runs, but the University of Utah softball team lost its Pac-12 Conference series finale at No. 2 Arizona State, 13-5 in six innings, on Sunday at Farrington Stadium.
Utah (26-26, 1-20 Pac-12) hit four homers on the day against Arizona State.
Elliott led the way by clubbing three solo home runs against the Sun Devils. The Spanish Fork, Utah native is now tied with senior third baseman Whitney Holm for the team lead with eight home runs this year. Elliott has now driven in 25 runs this season and 31 during her time as a Ute. She is tied for third on the squad with 16 extra-base hits in 2012.
Elliott joins two others in Utah softball history who have hit three home runs in a single game: Lyndsey Trevis versus Massachusetts on Mar. 10, 2001 and Niki Hayhurst against Colorado State on Apr. 1, 2001.
Utah plays its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday against Utah Valley. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. MT with audio and live stats available at utahutes.com.
UTAH STATE SOFTBALL: At Logan, Utah State was swept by No. 12 Hawai'i, 18-0 in five innings and 10-3 in a doubleheader at a sun-drenched LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field on Sunday afternoon, spoiling USU's Senior Day in its season finale.
Hawai'i clinched the regular-season Western Athletic Conference title and the top seed in next week's league tournament with the win in the first game and padded its national ranking with the win in the second, improving to 43-5 overall and 17-3 in WAC action with the wins. USU ends its season at 17-36 overall and 4-17 in conference play.
Saturday was Senior Day for USU as the Aggies honored their four seniors in a pre-game ceremony, recognizing Dani Chaplin, Tatem Day, Kelley Kaneshiro and Lindsey Marquez in their final day in Aggie uniforms.
