Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation to host banquet honoring seven former coaches

The Utah Sports Hall of Fame Foundation will honor seven former coaches during the 2012 Distinguished Coaches and Coaches of Merit Banquet on May 16.

Carol Benson, Lynn Christensen, Val Cullimore, Dean Fowles, Russ Lauber and Steve Sanderson will receive "Distinguished Coach" awards, and Wes Christensen will be presented a "Coach of Merit" award (for individuals who have coached at both the high school and collegiate level) at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy, with a 6:15 p.m. reception and 7 p.m. dinner. Benson coached Ogden High School's girls tennis team for 24 years, winning 17 state championships.

Lynn Christensen coached Hurricane High School to a state championship in basketball, and won eight region titles with Pine View High School.

Wes Christensen coached South Cache High School to a state wrestling title, and posted 166-34-2 record in dual matches as Ricks College's coach for 16 years.

Cullimore won four consecutive state championships as Davis High School's golf coach, in addition to his success with the baseball programs at Woods Cross and Davis.

Fowles coached Delta High School's football team for 24 years, winning five state championships.

Lauber won 20 consecutive state championships in girls swimming, and earned 15 boys titles in his 26 years as Brighton High School's coach.

Sanderson (the father of Utah high school wrestling legend Cael Sanderson, now the wrestling coach at Penn State) coached nationally-ranked wrestling teams at Wasatch High School, while posting a 419-24-2 record and winning 11 state championships with Viewmont and Wasatch.
