BOSTON — Alex Rodriguez took over fifth place with his 631st career home run, Eric Chavez added two homers and the New York Yankees spoiled the Boston Red Sox 100th anniversary celebration of Fenway Park with a 6-2 win Friday.
Rodriguez' solo shot on the first pitch of the fifth inning put him past Ken Griffey Jr. and 29 homers behind Willie Mays' fourth-place total of 660. Derek Jeter moved into 18th place with his 3,111th career hit, passing Dave Winfield.
The victory came exactly 100 years after the Red Sox beat the Yankees' forerunner, the New York Highlanders, 7-6 in 11 innings.
TWINS 5, RAYS 4: At St. Petersburg, Josh Willingham extended his season-opening hitting streak to 14 games with a go-ahead three-run double.
Willingham's hit in the seventh puts him one away from tying Kirby Puckett's team mark of hitting safely in 15 straight games to start the 1994 season.
BLUE JAYS 4, ROYALS 3: At Kansas City, Mo., Jose Bautista singled home the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays turned their first triple play in 33 years.
ANGELS 6, ORIOLES 3: At Anaheim, Calif., Howie Kendrick had three RBIs on three hits as Jerome Williams (1-1) earned the win.
WHITE SOX 7, MARINERS 3: At Seattle, Adam Dunn collected five RBIs on a 3-for-4 outing and scored twice.
INDIANS 4, ATHLETICS 3: At Oakland, Calif., Jack Hannahan had three RBIs in a narrow win.
REDS 9, CUBS 4: At Chicago, Cincinnati batted around in the first inning for the 10,000th win in franchise history, joining the Cubs, Giants, Dodgers, Braves and Cardinals as the only teams to reach that plateau.
Drew Stubbs drove in three runs for the Reds while the Cubs dropped their sixth straight and fell to 3-11 on the year.
CARDINALS 4, PIRATES 1: At Pittsburgh, Lance Lynn allowed only an inside-the-park homer to Alex Presley in seven innings to lead the Cardinals.
It was just the Pirates' second inside-the-parker at PNC Park since it opened in 2001.
NATIONALS 2, MARLINS 0: At Washington, Ross Detwiler allowed three hits over six innings and struck out seven, equaling a career high, while Rick Ankiel homered and had three hits.
GIANTS 4, METS 3 (10 INNINGS): At New York, Hector Sanchez hit a go-ahead single in the 10th inning off Frank Francisco.
DODGERS 3, ASTROS 1: At Houston, Matt Kemp homered again, one of his three hits, and drove in two runs.
Kemp's eighth home run gave him 20 RBIs this season, tying him with Wally Moon for the Dodgers record for most home runs through 14 games.
ROCKIES 4, BREWERS 3: At Milwaukee, Michael Cuddyer hit a tiebreaking RBI single off closer John Axford in the ninth inning for the Rockies.
BRAVES 9, DIAMONDBACKS 1: At Phoenix, Brian McCann hit a two-run homer, Freddie Freeman had a pair of RBI doubles and the Atlanta Braves routed the Arizona Diamondbacks for the second game in a row.
PHILLIES 4, PADRES 1: At San Diego, Juan Pierre hit a go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh inning to back Cole Hamels, and the Phillies beat the Padres for their 13th straight victory at Petco Park.
NEW YORK — Baseball players and owners have banned the type of personal-services contracts agreed to by Albert Pujols and Ryan Zimmerman during the offseason.
In addition, the sides said Friday they have prohibited the bonuses for milestone accomplishments contained in the deal Pujols signed with the Los Angeles Angels and the agreement between Alex Rodriguez and the New York Yankees that began in 2008.
