Ruth Turpin Bird1913-2012Ruth Turpin Bird died peacefully at her home on April 16, 2012. She was born July 7, 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah to LeRoy and Effie Lauretta Olsen Turpin. Effie died when Ruth was three years old and LeRoy married Lauretta's sister, Alice Margaret Olsen, who became a loving second mother. Ruth grew up in Murray and was a farmer's daughter, helping with the animals and other farm chores. She attended Murray schools and graduated from the University of Utah, where she was a member of the Honorary Literary Society, Alpha Beta Theta. She taught at a number of elementary schools in the years before her marriage.Ruth married Everett Alonzo Bird on February 9, 1945 in the Salt Lake Temple, and they proceeded to establish a family that would eventually swell to eight children. Everett's hobby was raising game birds, mostly pheasants, and Ruth supported him as he ran his bird farm and egg hatchery. Ruth was faithful member of the LDS church and held many church callings. When her husband died she fulfilled an LDS mission to Fresno, California. She also worked in the Jordan River Temple for many years, loved the people she met there, and attended there weekly until a few days before her death. Ruth found joy in the beauty of her flower garden and in all the little birds that frequented there to feast on the seed she scattered. She loved her family and devoted her life to its welfare. Her kindnesses and accepting nature brought her many steadfast friends. One of the hardest things for her to accept as she became older and more infirm was being served instead of serving. She leaves a legacy of faith, charity and love for all who knew her.Ruth is survived by her children Carol (Richard) Beckstrand, Howard E. (Margaret), Bruce T. , Evelyn (Fred) Gruter, Margaret (Steven) Lee, Diane (Jeffrey) Lym, and Byron Clyde; 23 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Norma (Arvil) Gale, Phyllis (Reed) Bills and Elaine (Frank) Meyer. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Marvin, and son, Dennis L.
