MANCHESTER, England — Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes scored in each half as Manchester United cruised to a 2-0 win against 10-man Queens Park Rangers on Sunday, extending the defending champion's lead to eight points at the top of the Premier League.

United's eighth straight league win increased the pressure on crosstown rival Manchester City in second place. City visited Arsenal later Sunday.

Rooney fired his 30th goal of the season from a 15th-minute penalty after Ashley Young seemed to be pushed over by QPR captain Shaun Derry. Derry was sent off despite replays suggesting Young was offside and minimal contact.

United created chance after chance against 10 men, but relegation-threatened QPR resisted until Scholes lashed a trademark drive for the second in the 68th.
