"It was a good weekend. It was nice to see Adam give us that start in the first game. He controlled it the whole way," said head coach Eric Madsen. "I was really pleased with our guys. They did what they had to do. We still have a lot of things we have to improve on but to be 5-0 this week after playing the No. 4 team and to open conference is great."
Gunn threw the Wolverines' first individual complete-game shutout of the season. It's the third time this season UVU has shut out its opponent. The junior right-hander retired the first nine UND batters of the game and went on to strike out five while allowing just three hits.
Jake Rickenbach supplied the game's first RBI in the third inning when his single to right-center drove in Alex Exon.
The Wolverines would add to the 1-0 lead the very next inning; with the bases loaded and one down, Exon drove a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Billy Burgess. Willie Pratt then gave UVU a 3-0 lead with a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Goose Kallunki.
In the sixth inning, UVU used a two-out rally to add onto the lead with two more runs. Back-to-back singles from Jordy Hart and Pratt got things started before Rickenbach worked a walk to load the bases. Sean Moysh then delivered a two-run single up the middle to plate Hart and Pratt, extending the lead to 5-0.
Exon had two hits to lead UVU in the opener while Gunn improved to 4-3 with the win. Jeff Campbell also pitched a complete game for the Fighting Sioux but took the loss after allowing five runs (three earned) on the seven hits.
In Game 2, North Dakota jumped on top with a two-run home run by Campbell in the first, but then UVU's Billy Burgess and Austin Heaps both had RBI singles and Goose Kallunki capped the scoring with his third home run of the week, a three-run blast that made it 5-2.
Heaps tripled in the second inning to drive in Burgess and Sean Moysh singled home two runs in the third as Utah Valley took a 9-2 lead after three.
Willie Pratt's base hit in the fourth brought in two more before Jordy Hart singled home another run to give the Wolverines a 12-2 advantage.
Campbell had an RBI single in the fifth to put another run on the board for the Fighting Sioux. Pratt then ended the game early on a single through the left side that scored Kallunki with two on and one out in the eighth.
Heaps and Pratt both finished with three hits in the second game with Pratt and Kallunki each driving in three runs.
Kole Mickolio got the win after throwing an inning in relief. It's Mickolio's first win on the mound since 2009 after the right-hander missed the last two seasons due to injury. Brett DeGagne' took the loss for North Dakota, which got a 4-for-4 game at the plate from Campbell.
The 10-game winning streak has come during an 11-game home stand and UVU will now hit the road next week for five games starting Tuesday at Utah at 6 p.m. from Spring Mobile Ballpark. The Wolverines also play four league games at Chicago State beginning Friday.
NO. 18 SLCC 6-8, SOUTHERN NEVADA 4-3: At Salt Lake City, the Bruins (27-5, 18-3) notched the four-game sweep as Rhett Parkinson got the Game 1 win, giving way to Dane Fuller for the one-out save. Nathan Fishel was 2 for 3 with a double, home run and two runs driven home. Palmer Page was 2 for 3 with two RBIs in the win.
Ruddy Acosta and Mike Springer combined to get the final win with Springer throwing three shutout innings. The Bruins used a four run fourth inning to secure the win with Braden Anderson going 3 for 4 with a triple and two RBI's. Dominique Taylor was 2 for 4 with a triple and Colton Barkdull was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
NO. 1 CAL 11-12, UTAH 3-3: At Salt Lake City, freshman outfielder Kate Dickman registered two hits and two RBIs on the day, but it wasn't enough for the Utes to avoid dropping a pair of contests.
