SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah baseball team upset fourth-ranked Arizona, 7-6, on Friday evening.
With the Utes trailing 6-5 headed into the bottom of the eighth inning, a bizarre play saw Biss Larsen reach base following a strikeout, and Gavin Green come around to score the tying run after a pair of errors. Tyler Relf sent in the game-winning run with an RBI double.
Tyler Wagner entered the game on the mound in the top of the ninth, and although he allowed one hit and one walk, he finished off Seth Mejias-Brean with a ground out to end the game and give the Utes the victory, snapping a seven-game slide. Wagner picked up his first save of the season.
Utah (8-21, 4-7 Pac-12) was led at the plate by James Brooks and Parker Morin, who each went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Relf also drove in two runs.
Brock Duke pitched 5 2?3 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Mitch Watrous, who earned the win (his second of the season) after pitching 2 1?3 innings, allowed one run on three hits with a strikeout.
LMU 3, BYU 2: Loyola Marymount used a 3-2 victory over BYU's baseball team to return to sole-possession of first place in the West Coast Conference on Friday night. LMU (13-13, 4-1) took an early lead through the first three innings and never trailed on their way to the win. BYU fell to 5-3 in WCC conference and 13-12 overall.
Jaycob Brugman and Stephen Wells both contributed an RBI in the loss.
SUU 9, W. ILLINOIS 5: At Macomb, Ill., the Thunderbirds trailed throughout most of the game before scoring all nine of their runs during the final two innings to claim the come-from-behind victory. SUU took its first lead in the top of the ninth on a three-run home run from David Headley and then added three more runs before holding off the Leathernecks.
Southern Utah third baseman Justin Neuhart finished the day 3-5 at the plate with three RBIs. David Headley also drove in three runs and scored two more while recording hits in both of his plate appearances.
Andy Harvey picked up the win for the Thunderbirds to even his record at 1-1 while Dan Russell took the loss to go to 2-2.
With the win, Southern Utah starts the Summit League season with a record of 1-0 to go along with its overall mark of 7-21.
The two teams will meet again today in a doubleheader.
UVU 20, NORTH DAKOTA 4: At Orem, Utah Valley University put together a pair of big innings on its way to a runaway win, 20-4, over North Dakota on Friday at Brent Brown Ballpark.
Goose Kallunki hit a grand slam and had five RBIs as the Wolverines (15-11) won their eighth straight game and moved to 2-0 in Great West Conference play.
Chris Kerns earned his first win as a Wolverine after throwing four scoreless innings in relief. Kerns struck out the last five hitters he faced, including the side in the seventh as the game ended in seven due to the 10-run rule.
"We stuck to the game plan and did a good job of controlling the momentum and taking advantage of the opportunities we were given," said head coach Eric Madsen. "Chris came in and pitched a shutdown inning after we scored the nine runs and after we had the seven-run inning he didn't let up at all."
The Wolverines scored in the first after a hit batter and two walks set up a sacrifice fly from Austin Heaps.
North Dakota put four on the board in the third to take a 4-1 lead. Jeff Campbell hit a three-run home run in the inning to put the Fighting Sioux in front.
The lead was short-lived as UVU scored nine runs in the third and seven more in the fourth to take control of the game.
