ST. GEORGE — Orem's girls track team established itself as a team to reckon with this season with an impressive victory at the Pine View Invitational over the weekend. The Tigers finished with 94 points to easily out-distance itself from defending 4A state champion Springville (68.5 points), as well as defending 3A state champion Cedar and 3A runner-up Park City, who finished with 64 points each.

"We were very pleased with our first invite of the year," said Orem coach Andy Jacobs. "We had many key performances by multiple girls. We only missed scoring in three events. I think that shows our depth in nearly every event. With only two seniors scoring, it also shows off our young athletes."

Wasatch and Woods Cross rounded out the top six in a meet with 26 girls teams participating.

On the boys side, Wasatch tallied 75 points to eke past Alta in a competition that featured 30 teams from around the state. Host Pine View finished third.

Cale Strong had a solid outing for Wasatch's boys winning three events, the 110 meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles and 200 meters. Strong is the defending 3A state champion in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles.

Wasatch's Matt Pelo (high jump) and Nate Lee (long jump) also claimed the top spots in their respective events to help Wasatch earn much needed points.

Along with his event winners, Wasatch coach Brad Foster said to keep an eye on Talem Franco in the coming weeks. He finished second in the 400 and third in the 800.

On the girls side, Orem's Summer Harper won the 3,200 meters and teammate Samantha Reeves prevailed in the 200 meters to highlight a fantastic meet for the Tigers.

Harper, who finished third in the 4A state cross country meet last fall, finished second to Natalie Shields in the 1,600 meet race as well her bid to sweep the distance events.

Springville's Aimee Wheeler had a great meet as well. The senior won both the 100 meters and the long jump. Last year Wheeler won the 4A state title in the long jump at 17'05.50. Her jump on Saturday was over six inches longer at 17'11.00.

Wasatch sophomore Kaitlyn Walker had a solid meet as well winning both the 100 and 300 hurdles.
