Rough start for Bulldogs at USA Hockey high school national championship
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah champion Judge Memorial got off to a rocky start in the USA Hockey high school national championship tournament at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex. The Bulldogs dropped a 7-2 decision to Brophy, Ariz., in the opening game of pool play Wednesday afternoon.
Judge was outshot 44-10 in the lopsided content. Tanner Touhy led the Broncos with two goals. Ryan Beneduce added a goal and an assist, while Zachary Cox finished with two assists.
Andrew Bergquist had a goal and an assist for Judge. James Jensen accounted for the Bulldogs' other score. Charlie Howard and Sam Taylor had assists.
Tournament play continues through Sunday morning.
PINNACLE (Ariz.) 9, BINGHAM 3: Utah's second-place team also had trouble in the tournament. Kyle Hermann netted a hat trick and Dylan Wiffen had two goals and two assists as the Pioneers tripled up the Miners. Alec Martin recorded four assists in the final game of the first day of action. Dimitrios Fuskandrakis led Bingham with three points (one goal, two assists). Anthony Burt added a pair of assists.
NEWARK (Ohio) 3, ARLINGTON (N.Y.) 1: The Generals followed the lead of Thomas Nichols, who finished with one goal and an assist. Gabriel Parini and Mitchell Anderson also netted goals for the victors.
WATERLOO (Iowa) 12, EVERETT (Wash.) 1: The Warriors overpowered the Hornets with a 54-14 shots-on-goal advantage. Lee Jensen led the barrage with three goals. Connor Hyde had four assists.
SKUTT/ELKHORN (Neb.) 4, HENDERSONVILLE (Tenn.) 2: The Skyhawks flew past the Commandos behind two goals and an assist from Adam Maher. Colin Weingaertner was credited with two assists.
SANTA MARGARITA (Calif.) 4, PLANO WEST (Texas) 2: The Eagles doubled up the Wolves. Brian Desmond paced the winning effort with one goal and an assist. Santa Margarita scored four straight goals to erase a 1-0 defict.
IDAHO FALLS 7, FORT DORCHESTER (S.C.) 3: The Tigers roared past the Patriots as Jake Thornberry and Jacob Dogal each scored twice. Cory Hott finished with a game-high three assists for Idaho Falls.
REGIS JESUIT (Colo.) 6, NORTH BROWARD (Fla.) 3: Colorado topped Florida in a game featuring a combined 81 shots-on-goal. Connor Wigton had two goals and an assist for Regis Jesuit. Ryan Wagner added a goal and two assists. Jake Simons scored twice for North Broward.
SKYLINE (Idaho) 9, CLEVELAND (N.M.) 0: The Grizzlies proved dominant with 66 shots. Cole Nukaya scored four goals and assisted on two others. Kevin Heilig contributed two goals and a pair of assists. Alex Wilde had four assists.
