IRVINE, Calif. — Brock Whitney drove in five runs, three in the four-run sixth to help the Cougar baseball team beat UC Irvine, 6-1, and end a three-game skid and even BYU's record at 5-5.
Whitney, a sophomore first baseman, hit a two-out double in the seventh to clear the bases and give the Cougars that 6-1 margin. Dillon Robinson led off the seventh with a double and scored when Tanner Chauncey hit a one-out bases loaded single to give BYU a 3-1 lead.
Whitney singled in BYU's first two runs, scoring the freshman Chauncey in both the second and the sixth for the 1-0 and 2-1 leads, respectively. Chauncey and Whitney went 4-for 5 and 3-for-4 on the night from the plate, respectively.
Cougar lefty Mark Anderson improved his record to 3-0 and was effective in the first five innings until he beaned three consecutive batters in the sixth to exit the mound.
SUU BASEBALL: At Cedar City, Southern Utah was unable to pick up a win in its first set of home games of the season, falling to UVU 12-5 and 3-1. With the pair of victories UVU doubled its previous win total to improve to 4-8.
UTAH SOFTBALL: At Fort Myers, Fla., Senior pitcher Generra Nielson allowed only one earned run in 12.0 innings as the Utah softball team defeated Georgetown, 5-1, and lost to host Florida Gulf Coast, 2-0, Friday at the FGCU Spring Break Tournament.
Utah is now 16-4 overall and has won 14 of its last 16 games.
Nielson posted a 0.58 ERA on the day with one earned run in 12.0 innings. The Blanding native struck out 19 opposing hitters and allowed only 12 hits. She took the decision in both games and is now 11-3 on the season and 32-15 over Utah career. Nielson has had eight games with 10 or more strikeouts or this season and 13 performances of 10 or more strikeouts over her career.
Senior third baseman Whitney Holm continued her hot hitting as she went 4-for-6 on the day. The Spanish Fork native had a pair of doubles and an RBI. Freshman outfielder Kate Dickman added two hits as well with a run scored.
SUU TRACK & FIELD: At Nampa, Idaho, Cameron Levins achieved All-American status in the 5,000-meters with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA National Championship. Levins set improved his own Southern Utah record with a time of 13:38.12.
AGGIE SOFTBALL: At Long Beach, Calif., the Aggies (8-10, 0-0 WAC) dropped their first two games in the Long Beach State Invitational on Friday. USU could not keep pace with the high-powered teams it faced on Friday, falling to Pittsburgh, 8-0, and No. 24 North Carolina, 11-2.
In the first game of the day for the Aggies, Pittsburgh struck first scoring three runs in the bottom half of the second frame. Maggie Sevilla scored the first run of the inning with a single shot to center field that scored the runner on second. Holly Stevens added two more runs with a hard hit grounder back towards the second baseman that was mishandled, giving the Panthers an early, 3-0 advantage.
In the second game of the day, Utah State met its second ranked opponent of this season in No. 24 North Carolina. The two team would got toe-to-toe through the first two innings. USU blinked first however, as UNC exploded in the top of the third inning, scoring five runs to take control on the game. The Tar Heels added another two runs in the top of the fourth to stretch their lead out to a, 7-0 advantage.
The Aggies looked to rally in the bottom of the fifth frame when lead-off hitter, senior infielder Lindsey Marquez doubled up the middle. Following Marquez's example, sophomore catcher Samantha Miller knocked a single up the middle of the diamond to put runner's on first and third, giving Utah State its first serious threat of the day.
UNC added four more insurance runs in the top half of the final frame, giving them 11 runs scored.
