Ray C. Bills"He rode off into the sunset"Ray C. Bills, died March 1, 2012 in the University of Utah Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Riverton on March 4, 1926 to Raymond and Della Crane Bills. Ray's father was killed in a farming accident 8 months before his birth. Ray left school during his junior year to join the Navy and fight in World War II. He was a Tin Can Sailor serving as a gunners mate aboard the USS Taylor and was involved in 14 major campaigns in the South Pacific. The USS Taylor was an escort to the USS Missouri when the peace treaty was signed in Tokyo Bay. He was always very proud of his military service. He was a member of the "Greatest Generation."He married Donna Densley on Dec. 6, 1946 in South Jordan, Ut. They made their home in Riverton. She passed away March 22, 2005.After his military service he worked at Combine Metals, US Lark Mines and Kennecott Utah Copper. He was a plumber and pipefitter. Member of the LDS church. Ray loved nothing better than to be on horseback with the "Bills" boys in West Canyon. He often said he had been born 100 years too late. He was a true cowboy. After his retirement he took up rawhide braiding even passing the skill on to special family members. He enjoyed attending the Riverton Senior Citizens Center and his association with so many wonderful friends. Ray served on the Jordan Canal Board and was a member of the VFW and American Legion. Ray was given an honorary diploma from Jordan High School in June of 2005.Ray is survived by his sister Gladys Fenstermaker, his daughter Deanne (Gary) Curtis, sons Darwin (Debra) Bills, Clay (Wendy) Bills; 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren with one expected this fall. Preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers and sisters: Bertha Harrison, Zelda Lloyd, Wes Bills, Orpha Eastman, Stan Bills and Ivan Bills.Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 AM at the Broomhead Funeral Home 12600 So. 2200 W. Riverton. Where a viewing will be held Monday evening from 6-8 PM and Tuesday 1 hour prior to services. Interment Riverton City Cemetery.
