Gene Richard Smith, MD1931 ~ 2012On February 27, 2012, our loving and devoted husband, dad and friend hung up his stethoscope after a valiant battle with illness. Gene was born on October 10, 1931 in Stroud, OK to Isaac D. and Mabel W. Smith, and grew up on the shores of Grand Lake in Disney, OK. He was the Student Body President of Ketchum High School, received his Bachelors from Northeastern University in 1953 and Doctorate of Medicine from the U of OK in 1957. During residency at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, he married his beautiful wife Sue Louise Clawson in the Salt Lake Temple. He finished orthopedic residency as a Sooner and completed a fellowship in the Kingdom of Jordan. Dad loved being a doctor and was in private practice from 1962 to 2003 in Farmington NM, Bountiful, UT and at the South Texas Orthopedic Clinic in San Antonio. He was an active member of the LDS church where he served with his wife on a mission to Nauvoo, IL, Director of the Family History Library, Stake Patriarch and Home Teacher. Dad loved sports, fishing, camping, golf, and everything family. He was well loved and respected, and a great example of selflessness and service. Preceded in death by his mother and father and brother Ralph Leland Smith. Survived by his sister, Betty Andrasko; his wife and best friend Sue, and children: Heidi (Scott) Sowards, Matthew (Heather), Curtis (Sara), David (Mindy), and 12 grandchildren. A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM on Saturday March 10, at the Salt Lake City Cemetery with an open house from 4 8 PM at the Matthew Smith home in Draper, Utah.
