Obituary: NICHOLSON, WALTER EDWIN SR.

Walter Edwin Nicholson, Sr."Nick"Walter Edwin Nicholson, Sr. passed away on Saturday, February 25, 2012 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born, July 30, 1919 in Howe, Grayson, Texas, the son of Elizabeth Cates and William Francis Nicholson. In the depression era Walt was in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp.) and helped to build the tunnel in Zion's National Park. He served in the Army in WWII, stationed at Fort Douglas and later at Hill Air Force Base as an aircraft mechanic. He married Doris Ford in 1944 and with that union they had two children; Walter Edwin Nicholson, Jr. (Ed) and William James Nicholson (Bill). Doris passed away, February 3, 1948. Walt married Alberta Hunt in 1957. They were married until Alberta's death, June 2002. Both marriages were solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS temple. He worked for the state of Utah as a mechanic and retired in 1968.Walt joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1957. He was always very proud of his membership in the church. One of the callings in the church that he enjoyed was working with the Explorer scouts for many years. He was a volunteer at the Salt Lake VA Hospital for 23 years. Walt was survived by his two sons; Ed (Sharon) and Bill (Marcie); 11 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson; one brother, Elbert. He is preceded in death by four great-grandchildren; three sisters and four brothers. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 2, 2012 at 11:00 am at the East Mill Creek 11th Ward, 2702 E. Evergreen Avenue (3435 South). A viewing will be held on Thursday evening, March 1, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East and from 9:45 am to 10:45 am at the church prior to services.
