Men's basketball roundup: Southern Utah loses to Oral Roberts for 19th straight time
CEDAR CITY — Dominque Morrison scored 24 points and Oral Roberts closed out the regular season with a school-record 17th Summit League victory, beating Southern Utah 73-71 Saturday night.
The Golden Eagles (26-5, 17-1) won their sixth straight game and topped the 25-win mark for the fifth time in school history — and second time since becoming a Division I program in 1969-70.
Top-seeded Oral Roberts will face No. 8 seed IPFW in the first round of the Summit League tournament on March 3, while Southern Utah (13-16, 8-10) will carry the No. 6 seed and face No. 3 Oakland on March 4.
Roderick Pearson added 15 points for the Golden Eagles and Warren Niles had 12.
Jackson Stevenett scored 22 points and Damon Heuir had 15 for Southern Utah, which lost to Oral Roberts for the 19th straight time. The Thunderbirds are moving to the Big Sky Conference next season.
UTAH VALLEY 74, UT-PAN AMERICAN 64: At Orem, Isiah Williams scored 28 points as Utah Valley reached the 20-win mark and clinched its second straight regular-season championship.
Geddes Robinson added 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Wolverines (20-10, 9-0 GWC), who have won 13 straight games heading into the final week of the regular season.
Brandon Provost had 15 points and five assists for Texas-Pan American (11-18, 5-3), which had won four straight games surrounded by a pair of losses to the Wolverines.
A 3-pointer by Williams capped a 10-0 run that put Utah Valley ahead 29-17 with 6 minutes left in the first half. The Wolverines were ahead 37-24 at the break and maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half.
Utah Valley outrebounded Pan American 46-21.
WESTMINSTER 72, GREAT FALLS 57: At Salt Lake City, the Griffins (20-10, 8-6 Frontier) claimed a 10th straight 20-win season, finishing third in the conference standings to earn a quarterfinal home game. Great Falls drops to 19-10 overall and 7-7 in league with the loss.
The Griffins only trailed twice in the game, once at 2-0 and again at 4-3. A 12-3 run early in the first half opened up an eight point margin and they would eventually push the lead to 29-19 at halftime. Westminster opened the second half with an 11-3 push that gave them a 40-22 lead with 16:53 remaining. UGF wouldn't get closer than 12 the rest of the way as Westminster cruised to the win.
Westminster shot 50 percent from the floor for the game and shot 52.4 percent after halftime. They came up with 16 assists on the 22 made field goals with 12 turnovers. The Griffins made 7-of-14 from beyond the arc and were 21-of-26 from the foul line, including 19-of-20 in the final 20 minutes. They forced 16 UGF turnovers and scored 21 points from them.
AJ Reilly made a huge impact for the Griffins on Senior Night. Reilly finished the game with 21 points on 6-of-11 shooting with four rebounds and four assists. Fellow senior Ben Walker scored 19 points and grabbed five rebounds.
The surprise of the night was the performance of senior Josh Schouman. He entered the night having appeared in just five games in his career and having only scored three points. On Saturday, Schouman played 14 minutes off the bench and scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting with two threes.
Melvin Williams led the Argonauts with 19 points with two assists and two steals. David Ubadigbo added 14 points off the bench. UGF scored 19 points from 12 offensive rebounds.
By earing the No. 3 seed for the conference tournament, Westminster will play host to Rocky Mountain College on Tuesday. The game will tip at 7 p.m. in the Behnken Field House.
