The Washington Post takes a first-hand look at diversity in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by visiting the church's Anacostia Ward, or congregation, near the Maryland-Washington, D.C. border.

"Many times we hear of diversity in the church, but oftentimes we don't see it," Bryan Powell, an insurance executive and the Anacostia Ward's first counselor, or assistant pastor, tells reporter Hamil R. Harris. "Here at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we don't just talk about it. We see it; we live it. We are all together one family, and that is the way the Lord would have it."

Harris provides history, statistics, member testimonies and a former-Mormon commentary in this interesting overview of LDS minorities and their standing in the church.

"There is no future when we live in the past," says one black Latter-day Saint in explaining how he has come to terms with his church's past. "This church is about rescuing people no matter who they are, from mainland China to Southeast Washington."
