LOS ANGELES — Phil Mickelson made the most out of his limited chances Friday to stay in the lead at the Northern Trust Open.

Mickelson holed a lob wedge from 110 yards on the eighth hole for eagle and chipped in for birdie for the second straight day. That helped him to a 1-over 70, leaving him two shots clear of the early starters at balmy Riviera.

Mickelson, coming off a win last week at Pebble Beach, was at 6-under 136.

Jimmy Walker had a 66 and was at 4-under 138, along with Carl Pettersson (70) and Matt Kuchar (69), who was stung by a bee near the sixth green.

The wind was not nearly as severe. What kept scores from going lower were greens that were getting more bumpy.
