MEN'S GOLF: Senior Brad Millard shot 5-under par 67 to take a three-shot lead over a group of four players and lead Southern Utah to the first-round lead Monday at the eighth annual Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational men's golf tournament. The tournament is being held at the 6,879-yard, par 72 Sunbrook Golf Course in St. George.
Millard went out in 34 and came home in 33 to hold the lead over Cal Poly's Scott Patterson, Cal State Northridge's Chris Russo, Utah State's Tanner Higham and Cal State Fullerton's Mark Anguiano, wo all shot 2-under 70 on the Point and Woodbridge nines at Sunbrook.
As a team, SUU was the only team under par, at 4-under 284, four shots up on second-place Cal State Fullerton, which checked in at even par 288. Cal Poly was third at 290, followed by Oral Roberts (291), College of Charleston (292) and Cal State Northridge (297).
Utah State was seventh, at 298, followed by Western Illinois (299), Weber State (301), Dixie State (302), Seattle U. (306), Utah Valley (307), Cal State Bakersfield (308) and Boise State (309).
Jeff Evans and Sammy Cole were second among Thunderbirds, tied for sixth place at 1-under par 71, with Nic Booth 35th at 75 and Jake Holt in 67th at 79. Three Thunderbirds are competing as individuals — Greg Kerber (35th, 75), Jordan Orth (52nd, 77) and Tyler Hunt (90th, 93).
The tournament concludes today with the final round, beginning at 9 a.m.
UTAH VALLEY
MEN'S GOLF: The Utah Valley University men's golf team sits in 12th place after the opening round of the SUU Pat Hicks Invitational men's golf tournament on Monday at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George.
"We good off to a poor start and never really got it going in the right direction," UVU men's golf coach Chris Curran said. "We couldn't buy a putt."
Mason Casper, who won the tournament last year, shot a two-over 74 and is in 28th place heading into today's final 18 holes.
As a team, the Wolverines are just 10 shots off sixth place, and 23 shots behind leader Southern Utah, which shot an opening-round 284.
"We have our work cut out for us," Curran said. "We seem to play better in the final round and that's what we'll have to do."
Stratton Schulz shot a three-over 75 and is tied for 35th, while Clark Fredrickson shot a six-over 78. Michael Dart and Brayden Eriksen finished with rounds of 80 and 86, respectively.
