NYC mayor defends policy evicting churches from public school buildings

In January, more than 200 pastors and church members gathered to sing hymns and say prayers outside a public school in the Bronx after a New York City Department of Education decision to ban religious groups from renting space in public schools for Sunday services.

The mayor of New York City is defending a policy preventing churches from renting public school buildings to hold weekend services

Mayor Michael Bloomberg defended the policy citing separation of church and state, despite leaving dozens of churches without a place to meet.

New York's high cost of rent could pose problems for congregations who are struggling to find a place to meet.
