'Andy's Run' May 20 will aid teen encephalitis sufferer
KAYSVILLE -- Viral encephalitis is a mysterious disease and medical science still doesn't understand much about it, or even how it is transmitted. However, Andrew Grant, 14, of Farmington, somehow acquired the disease and is dying from it.One of his closest friends, Matt Haws, 14, has organized "Andy's Run," a 5K and 10K walk/run, set for Saturday, May 20, in Barnes Park to not only honor his friend, but also to raise money for new research into the deadly disease.
Haws hopes to raise at least $10,000, with proceeds going to Primary Children's Medical Center.
"We're hoping Andy makes it to May 20," Lisa Haws, Matt's mother said, explaining he isn't doing very well this month and could die at any time.
She said the two boys have been friends ever since Andy moved to Utah from back east about five years ago.
"He's really touched a lot of lives," she said.
The two boys are eighth-grade students at Farmington Junior High School and the cause is also receiving support from the school.
The 5K (3.1-mile) race will begin at 9 a.m. on May 20 and the 10K (6.2-mile) race will start at 10 a.m. Minimum advance entry fee is $10 for the shorter race and $15 for the longer version. Entry includes a T-shirt. Those who register the morning of the race will pay an additional $5.
Barnes Park is west of I-15 along 200 North.
Advance registration is available by mailing in the entry fee to: Andy's Run, P.O. Box 252, Farmington, UT 84025
