LOGAN — After a rough start to the season, the Utah State men’s tennis team has now won two matches in a row, having beat Colorado Mesa University in a quick, 6-1, match Saturday, at the Logan Sports Academy and Racquet Club.
The Aggies got things started with an easy sweep in doubles action. Junior Sven Poslusny and freshman Marcus Fritz were in the No. 1 position and defeated Brason Hollabaugh and Andrew Hernandez, (8-1).
Senior Nate Ballam and freshman Matt Sweet took down Jordan Lyden and Forrest Kennel, (8-3). The team’s set of brothers, junior Lenny Whiting and sophomore Andrew Whiting, closed off the competition with an 8-0 sweep over John Hendrickson and Sterling Inoyue.
The success carried over to singles play with Poslusny taking down Hollabaugh in two sets, (6-2, 6-1). Fritz followed suit, defeating Hernandez, (6-1, 6-3). Sweet won his first set and fought hard, but could not finish with the win and fell to Lyden, (6-7, 6-2, 10-4).
Having sat out USU’s last two matches with the flu, sophomore Fredrik Peterson was back in competition, defeating Hendrickson, (6-1, 6-2). Lenny Whiting beat Inoyue, (6-0, 6-1), while Ballam wrapped things up with a win over Kennel, (6-1, 6-1).
The Aggies are halfway through their six-match homestand. Action will continue Wednesday, Feb. 22, as the team hosts Weber State at noon.
