America's love for fast food is, it turns out, a bit unequal. In Utah, for example, there's not quite one-half a fast-food restaurant per 1,000 people, while Vermont has 1.18 fast food restaurants per 1,000.
We know this because Melanie Hicken of Business Insider used data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to calculate it. She found that big states like California, New York, Texas and Florida had the most actual locations, but not the most restaurants per capita. Vermont and the nation's capital led that list.
Utah came in dead last, just ahead of Mississippi, with 1,341 fast-food locations to serve its 2.7 million eaters, for a rate of 0.49 locations per 1,000 population. Mississipi had just over one-half fast-food place per 1,000.
