SALT LAKE CITY — A memorial service to commemorate and celebrate the life of Alecsander Barton will run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Moonbeam Lodge at Solitude Mountain Resort, 12000 Big Cottonwood Canyon.
Barton, an avid skier and snowboarder, was killed Saturday after being caught in an avalanche in the Mineral Falls area of Big Cottonwood Canyon. The University of Utah student was on a snowboard when he triggered a 700-foot-wide slide that carried him nearly a half-mile down the mountain and buried him under 3 feet of debris.
The memorial service is open to anyone who knew and loved Barton, according to a Facebook page for the event.
Barton would have been 25 on Jan. 30.
