Truck plummets 100 feet off of road, driver survives

HELPER — A man was hospitalized Saturday after his truck went 100 feet down an embankment.

The Penske rental truck ran off the road 14 miles outside of Helper on U.S. 6 around 5 p.m., Department of Public Safety spokesman Joe Dougherty said. The truck landed on one set of train tracks, but trains were able to pass on another line.

The truck's driver, who remained conscious, was transported from the scene by a medical helicopter. Dougherty said it was reported by troopers at the scene that the man had suffered some broken bones.

A wrecker was at the scene attempting to move the vehicle from the tracks late Saturday.

What caused the man to leave the roadway is currently under investigation.
