FBI special agent and BYU graduate Daniel Lee Knapp drowned Thursday, Dec. 29, while attempting to rescue a distressed swimmer in the ocean in northeast Puerto Rico, the fbi.gov website reported.
“Special Agent Knapp exemplified each of the ideals of the FBI, as well as possessing those traits which define a genuine wonderful person. He died a hero, saving another life. We will miss him greatly,” said Joseph S. Campbell, special agent in charge of the FBI San Juan Field Office.
The Associated Press reported Knapp was born in Loma Linda, Calif., and graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 7, in Las Vegas. A complete obituary for Knapp is available online.
