Bookmarks: Recently released books about past wars

Here are some books about World War II, the Korean War and the Civil War that have crossed our desks recently.

HARDBACK

"FATAL CROSSROADS: The Untold Story of the Malmedy Massacre at the Battle of the Bulge," by Danny S. Parker, Da Capo Books, $26 pages, 377 pages (nf)

Using research from both American and German sources, author Danny S. Parker reconstructs what may have happened leading up to Dec. 17, 1944, when more than 80 U.S. soldiers were shot down after surrendering to an SS unit in Belgium.

"A TRAIN IN WINTER: An Extraordinary Story of Women, Friendship and Resistance in Occupied France," by Caroline Moorehead, Harper, $27.99, 374 pages (nf)

Caroline Moorehead pieces together the stories of 230 women of many backgrounds, ages and races, who fought for the Resistance in France during the Nazi occupation. They were rounded up by and sent by train to Auschwitz, where only 49 of them survived.

"THE BATTLE OF THE CRATER," by Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen, Thomas Dunne Books, $27.99, 364 pages (f)

An explosion on July 30, 1864, near Petersburg, Va., launched one of the most disastrous Union debacles in the Civil War and lead to about 3,800 casualties. This historical book tells the story of the military operation to plant a bomb underneath the Confederate Army along with the political ramifications.
