DRAPER — Gingerbread, gumdrops, peppermint sticks and lots of icing will be flying as local architects compete for charity in the Harmons Extreme Gingerbread Event.
The fun competition will be held at the Bangerter Crossing store on 125 E. 13800 South in Draper on Dec. 10 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The public is encouraged to drop by to see the progress of the architects from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or visit www.harmonsgrocery.com to watch video updates of the event.
When the houses are completed, individuals can vote for their favorites online. A panel made up of Harmons associates and children will pick a winner based on imagination, creativity and technique.
The gingerbread structures will be on display in the store until Dec. 16, when they will be auctioned off at a special Cooking School Holiday Party. Half of the proceeds will be used to purchase food for the Utah Food Bank and the other half will benefit The One Percent, an architectural charitable organization that provides design support services for communities in need.
Children and parents can learn how to build their own gingerbread house for the holidays during Harmons gingerbread house-making class, which will be held the same day as the competition.
The class, which will be on the mezzanine level inside the Harmons Cooking School kitchen, begins at noon and runs until 2 p.m. Space is limited. Children must be 6 to 12 years old and accompanied by a parent at all times. The cost is $15.
To register for the class go to www.harmonsgrocery.com or call 801-617-0133.
