Man killed, woman injured in auto-pedestrian accident in Fruit Heights

FRUIT HEIGHTS — One man was killed and his wife critically injured in an auto-pedestrian accident in Fruit Heights Friday.

The pair was traveling south on Mountain Road just past Northridge Road around 7 p.m. when they pulled over, Davis County Sheriff's Sgt. Susan Poulsen said. Officials don't know what prompted the couple to stop, but said they may have been trying to rearrange some items in the rear of their vehicle.

"When they pulled over, they didn't pull completely out of the lane of travel," Poulsen said. "They were still partially in the lane of travel."

The couple, who are in their 20s, were outside of their vehicle when a second southbound vehicle approached and struck them.

The driver of that car called 911 and provided basic life support for the victims until paramedics arrived. He told police that he didn't see the individuals before hitting them, as the lights of a northbound vehicle and heavy snow obstructed his view.

"The headlights, along with the blinding snow created really poor visibility for him," Poulsen said. "He wasn't able to see them and he pinned both victims."

The weather conditions prevented a medical helicopter from responding to the scene and the male patient died en route to an area hospital.

"It was very tragic and horrific and extensive injuries to both patients," Poulsen said. "It appears that it was just a tragic accident."

Poulsen said the woman was in surgery Friday evening and is expected to survive. She did not say where the couple was going, but said they are "local to the area."
