Nominations are now open for the 2011 Whitney Awards for the best fiction published by an LDS writer in 2011 regardless of publisher or market.
The Whitney Awards are named for early Mormon apostle Orson F. Whitney, who gave an inspirational speech that prophesied that one day we would have “Miltons and Shakespeares of our own.” Previous recipients include such bestselling authors as Orson Scott Card, Gerald Lund, Kerry Blair, Dean Hughes, Dave Wolverton, Jamie Ford, Brandon Sanderson and many others.
For those of you who enjoy fiction by those who are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, please go to www.whitneyawards.com or www.ldstorymakers.com and click on the link to nominate books in as many of the seven genre categories as you choose: general fiction, historical fiction, romance, mystery/suspense, speculative (sci-i/fantasy), young adult general and young adult speculative. A book requires at least five reader nominations to be considered. The deadline is Dec. 31.
Once entered, a panel of five distinguished judges goes through a complex voting process to narrow the field to five finalists in each category. The Whitney Academy, which includes hundreds of successful authors, reviewers, editors and publishers, then reads all the books selected as finalists before casting a final vote.

The Whitneys are a great way to recognize quality work and to help readers become more aware of the fine literature by Latter-day Saints being published.
