Construction worker hit by dump truck on I-15

DRAPER — A 30-year-old construction worker was critically injured early Thursday when he was struck by a dump truck on I-15.

The man was hit just before 4 a.m. on northbound I-15 near 14300 South while he was  removing traffic barrels, Unified Fire Authority Capt. Lee Ascarte said. Construction workers further up on the roadway had apparently opened the lane.

"The consensus from multiple people was that the worker that was struck didn't expect any traffic in that lane," Ascarte said. "It sounds like there was a miscommunication between the workers."

The driver of the dump truck stopped immediately and called 911. Ascarte said he was  "obviously distraught over the incident."

The injured worker suffered multiple fractures and a head injury and was transported to an area hospital in less than 30 minutes.

The Utah Highway Patrol is conducting an investigation into the incident.
