Kaysville man killed in Layton cycling accident

LAYTON — A 70-year-old Kaysville man was killed Sunday when he was hit by a truck while riding a bicycle.

Donald Blood was riding west on state Route 193 near 2500 East about 9:15 a.m. when he was hit by a pickup truck traveling in the same direction. Blood, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The female driver of the truck was taken to Davis Hospital because she was "very distraught, distressed and hyperventilating," said Layton Police Sgt. Todd Derrick. The woman did not sustain any physical injuries, police said.

The truck struck the cyclist with its right front end, breaking a headlight, signal light and causing damage to the windshield.

Police were working Sunday to figure out why the truck hit the cyclist.

Derrick cautioned motorists to "be aware of people not only on motorbikes but on bicycles."

Westbound lanes on state Route 193 were closed for several hours between 2400 East and 2600 East while police investigated the accident.
