One in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism according to AutismSpeaks.org, and a local art store hopes to do something to help.

Painting with a Twist, 258 East Winchester Street, Murray, will host "Painting with a Purpose," a painting class to benefit Autism Speaks, Sept. 29, 7-9 p.m.

"We chose to do this so we can raise awareness and donate to Autism Speaks so they can keep doing research," said Candice Vacher, the store's owner.

According to the organization's website, Autism Speaks is an organization dedicated to funding autism research, increasing awareness in the community and advocating for the needs of those affected by the disorder.

Debbie Joplin, a regular patron at Painting with a Twist, decided to organize the event because of her personal connection with autism. She has a 15-year-old boy who was diagnosed with autism and is currently the vice president of the Utah Autism Coalition.

Autism Speaks stated the number of people diagnosed with autism is growing 10-17 percent annually, and Joplin thinks this can serve as a motivation to become involved in the cause.

"If people don't know someone with autism, they will in a year," Debbie Joplin said.

The class will be taught by local artist Anthony Ithurralde. Registration is $35 and is available online at www.paintingwithatwist.com/murray/ or by calling 801-305-4115.
