Family of teen killed by TRAX train files claim notice with UTA

WEST JORDAN — The family of a 15-year-old who was killed by a TRAX train in June has  has sent a notice of claim — a precursor to a lawsuit — to the Utah Transit Authority.

Salt Lake attorney Dan Steele, who represents the family, confirmed Tuesday the claim was submitted.

Under state statute, UTA has 60 days to respond to the notice. UTA has declined to comment on the matter, citing the potential lawsuit.

Shariah Casper was struck and killed on June 8 at a pedestrian crossing located near 3200 West and 8600 South. She had approached the track with a cousin and both had waited as an eastbound Mid-Jordan light-rail train passed. Because of 12-foot high sound walls that were in place at the time, Casper did not see an oncoming westbound train and crossed in front of its path, resulting in her death.

Casper's family and local community officials called for the removal of the walls, but also encouraged UTA to continue looking at how the routes could be made safer for residents impacted by the impending increase in train traffic.

A safety review was conducted at all pedestrian crossings following the accident, resulting in several changes and implementation of supplemental safety features at several crossings.
