Boy, 6, trapped behind wall for 30 minutes at Ogden church

OGDEN — A 6-year-old boy who fell into an old heat shaft during church was stuck behind a wall for over 30 minutes Sunday.

The boy and a friend were at a church, 1000 Jefferson, when they climbed through an open duct. The duct almost immediately dropped 30 feet. Ogden Fire Battalion Chief Corey Barton wasn't sure if the boy didn't see the drop-off or if he was initially trying to climb down.

Barton said the boy fell 10 feet where he fortunately was caught by a small ledge.

"He was not injured, luckily. He was able to stand up against the wall. There was a tiny lip to get the heels of his feet on," Barton said.

Ogden firefighters and a Heavy Rescue Team from the Riverdale Fire Department were called. The rescuers dropped a rope down the shaft and had the boy wrap it around his waist. They then drilled a couple of holes through the wall to determine his exact location.

Once they found the boy, they cut through a shelf and made a hole in the wall big enough for the boy to climb out.
